Built for the Future of PPE Compliance
The pressure on organisations to manage their PPE and workwear properly has never been greater. New inclusive PPE standards under BS 30417, incoming Digital Passport requirements under the EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), and BSIF data revealing that 82% of PPE sourced from non-registered suppliers fails to meet safety standards — the regulatory and safety landscape is shifting fast, and organisations are struggling to keep up.
A separate BSIF survey found outdated and poorly maintained PPE still in active use across UK workplaces. Not because employers don't care, but because without the right tools, tracking what's been issued, when it expires, and whether it's still fit for purpose is genuinely difficult to manage at scale.
Big Red Digital, creators of the Smart Red Uniform Management System, have responded with the launch of Garment Lifecycle Management — a new module that takes garment tracking down to an individual item level for the first time.
What Garment Lifecycle Management Does
Garment Lifecycle Management allows organisations and their suppliers to set configurable expiry dates, renewal periods and replacement triggers against individual garments. When an item is due for replacement, has expired, or has been reported as damaged, automatic notifications go out to the employee, their manager and site admin.
The module also introduces built-in document management. Compliance certificates, declarations of conformity, user instructions and care guidance can all be uploaded and stored against each product on the platform. Employees can confirm they've read fit and renewal guidance before an item is issued, with every acknowledgement timestamped and stored for audit purposes.
Sizing information stored at the individual level also means inclusive fit — a core requirement under BS 30417 — becomes a consistent standard across the entire workforce, rather than something left to chance.
Built for Suppliers and Buyers Alike
Garment Lifecycle Management is designed to work both ways: for employers managing their own workforce, and for PPE and workwear suppliers managing multiple client organisations through Smart Red. For suppliers in particular, the module offers a meaningful way to support clients' compliance obligations directly through the platform; strengthening relationships and providing a clear differentiator when competing for contracts where compliance is a deciding factor.
