For some time there has been a growing anticipation by several Google team members that mobile web browsing would soon outstrip browsing on a PC or Laptop. Google has just confirmed this prediction is now a fact.
Google reported that “more Google searches take place on mobile devices than on computers in 10 countries including the US and Japan.” They didn’t say what the other countries are or precisely when this switch occurred happened or indeed what the volumes of search queries were that they collected.
What Google did tell us what that mobile queries include those coming from Google’s mobile search apps and also from mobile browser-based search queries.
Google stressed that the mobile searches that they have counted that have outstripped are only smartphones as the company classes tablets in the same category as desktops and laptops.
What Google is saying suggests that the growth of mobile search is happening much faster than some had anticipated.
Jerry Dischler, Vice President of Product Management for Google AdWords said,
“We’ve hit an inflection point where more Google searches are taking place in mobile than desktop in 10 countries, including US and Japan. We think it’s a real turning point in digital adverting and we have been investing in mobile-focused initiatives, The purchase funnel is officially dead. It’s being replaced by short bursts of activity that we’ve been referring to as micro-moments”.
