My background is in sales recruitment. It was my job to understand the importance, and difficulty, in hiring good sales talent. Often when people are looking to add to their sales team it is for one of two reasons – 1) to replace an outgoing sales person, who is moving on, retiring or was forced to leave due to poor performance or 2) growth of the business means that more sales are required to continue this required growth.

Often therefore there is an urgency in hiring someone quickly, because vital sales activity is not being performed when the sales team is not at full capacity. What I’ve noticed is that it’s the building blocks of sales namely lead generation, lead nurturing and creating the initial enquiries that fall by the way side when sales teams aren’t full. This is potentially sustainable in the short term, but can have a significant impact on pipeline generation if the start of the pipeline isn’t being filled over a longer period of time.  

Sales is a vital role in a business. It’s the engine behind growth and sustainability. It is also one of, if not the most, difficult positions to fill. Back in my recruitment days, the main challenges my clients faced when hiring good sales talent were:-

1. It is incredibly time consuming to find, interview and onboard new sales people.

2. It is an expensive process to recruit someone, especially if you take into account the ‘opportunity lost’ cost, i.e. the potential sales you miss out on in the time it takes to fill the role.

3. No matter the background of the person, and their attitude, there are no guarantees of success in hiring. Therefore you may be shelling out again for recruitment fees, salaries, pensions etc, without seeing a return on your initial hire.
