Of course you want it to look world-class.

We are often told by a client  “Look at that – that is how we want to look” and we are shown a market leading competitor site using top-notch professional photography…and then we are sent a selection of images taken by the Marketing Manager on his or her iPhone or SLR to work with.

That may be fine for Facebook, but it is definitely NOT fine for your website.

Versus:

And don’t forget to optimise all of the images so that they load fast and contain ALT tags for search engine optimisation. Slow loading images are the bane of mobiles and can attract penalties from Google.

Does your website look world class? If not - why not?

Take The Test!

Have you maximised all your professional images for Google/mobile use?

A. Yes

B. No

E. Don’t Know

The Stanford Persuasive Technology Lab showed 2,440 participants several websites and asked them how they evaluated the credibility of these sites. Almost half (46.1%) said that the number one criterion for discerning the credibility of the presented material was the website’s design and images. Poor images therefore cost you credibility and lose you potential customers - almost half.

If your imagery is not optimised properly then it will load slowly: if it loads slowly then your website will be slow overall and your users will not only get a bad experience in general but in all likelihood you will be ranked lower by Google.

Google has included image loading speed in its ranking algorithms since 2010 so this is not to be ignored.

Modern SLRs and other cameras shoot in fantastic resolution so the files are just too big to be used raw: they have to be compressed by as much as 90% in order to work effectively.

They also need to be uploaded properly and include ALT tags and other technical information to make them web-ready.

Users don’t want to wait – if they have to wait for your website what does that say about your service in general? Make the experience responsive and fast.
