The iPhone will be 10 years old in June 2017.

Hard to believe isn't it? It's also hard to believe that the majority of online interactions now take place using a mobile device.

Mobile computing is now the norm.

The crossover happened “officially” in October 2016 and traffic is only headed one way. And this data excludes social media use which would push it even higher in favour of mobile devices.

Mobile Web Traffic versus Desktop

Mobile Web Traffic v Desktop

If your website does not work properly on a mobile device then you have to accept that you are at a massive disadvantage.

Which site works for you?

Actually… which one could you even read on your mobile device?

Mobile friendly website comparison

The one on the left has not been optimised so is static, small, uninviting and looks “old”. The one on the right is optimised, rotates to fit the screen used, is responsive… and works!

The one on the left is now our client... so watch this space.

Does your site deliver on a mobile? If not - why not?

How much of your traffic comes from mobile devices?

Result

If you are below 50% then it would pay to check the analytics more closely in case users are trying to access your site on mobile devices and are giving up. If you are above then follow the pathways through that the users are taking to make sure they are getting what they need from the experience.

It is worth noting that all the available data strongly suggests that, at the moment, mobile users prefer to browse but switch back to desktop/laptop when buying. This is because the images and general experience on a larger screen environment is still better for the act of buying products online. This is not the case with tickets and other purchases that don’t have such a need for imagery before a buying decision is made.
