The Design Dilemma

Client: We need a graphic image to show the three parts of the business working in Harmony.

Designer: How about this...

 

Client: That's brilliant! But... what if we cut it in two like this...


...and then stuck the two bits back together like this...



Designer: But that's a square?

Client: Yes - but we like that better.

Designer: So you want me to design a three sided square?



Rule #1
- Get the initial brief/strategy right.

Rule #2 - You hired an expert, let them do their job.

Rule #3 - Concentrate on the 95% that works and let the design team worry about the 5% that needs tweaked

Rule #4 - a web site is never finished, it is only released. Build in contingency to do more of what works and less of what does not

Strategy Is What You Want To Achieve - Tactics Is How We Achieve It

Or...Strategy is the Big Picture; Tactics are all the little pictures that make up the big picture. Seems logical enough...but careful...the two don't always mix.

The brief quote on the Home page from Tracy Ehrenberg illustrates this problem exactly so it merits a little more of the back-story.

Pisces had hired a Big Name Web Design Company from California to bring together 5 different parts of their business and get them selling online. (Strategy).

It all looked great on paper.

What transpired was; they had lots of detailed, costly and time-consuming meetings with the BNWDC about colours (sorry...colors), technical aspects of Wordpress, fonts, images, positioning of text, speed of server, databases to be used...etc. (Tactics).

Two years into the project and they only had one site out of five up and running, no eCommerce, bits of it crashing, no integration with back-office, no prospect of it anytime soon, a LOT of money spent. In short - they became absorbed with the Tactics and lost sight of the Strategy.

Outcome: BNWDC fired. Start again with Big Red Digital.

A year later we had all of the sites running on one Platform (Big Red) and everything integrated into their back-office systems and even external databases in real time.

In 2016 they booked over $1m in direct online sales with almost the same again in pre-qualified sales leads from the website. That figure is increasing at 11% per annum.

As Tracy says - Result!

They knew what they wanted (Strategy) - we knew how to deliver it (Tactics). The BNDC got an outcome - Big Red got the result.
