It is vital to set targets.

Sounds obvious? In our experience online targets are not always clearly defined, especially not in specific numerical terms of conversion rates, sales, inventory turn, downloads etc.

Unless hard targets are set then you cannot reliably evaluate how well your site is performing. If you were to hire a sales rep you would set a target  - why not with your website?

As well as targets, there is the reality check of the “Who cares?” test. You have launched a new website – who cares? It’s the job of your digital marketing partner to make your target audience care. That takes a realistic budget, planning and time.

Obviously, the bigger the budget, the faster it can be achieved – but that is not always a linear equation. Tightly targeted digital marketing plans deliver more conversions and better directed traffic with less waste. A sniper rifle versus a shotgun. 

Analytics will tell you whether the site is working or not. The trick is to do more of what works and less of what doesn’t.

There is no general agreement on the “ideal” percentage of traffic growth as it depends on the stage you are at with your business strategy. For example, a brand new site starting from zero will have 100% growth over almost any timeframe from that point up to the end of the first year.

A general guideline is, however, that a reasonable marketing budget for your website should product 10% per month growth in traffic.

Of course, traffic growth means very little unless you are converting that traffic into sales – and thankfully we know a bit about that too!
